Motorcycle Riders at Risk, But Others Usually at Fault

The statistics show that operating a motorcycle is risky – more than 4,800 motorcyclists are killed in the United States each year, including 154 who died in Georgia last year. Accident data also reveal that responsibility for the accident more often lies with the other driver.

The majority of motorcycle accidents are crashes that occur at intersections and frequently involve traffic violations by the other driver – failure to yield the right of way, illegal turning, speeding or failure to obey a stop sign or traffic control signal.

Usually, the other driver is responsible for the accident but the rider is the one who suffers. Failure to see the motorcycle or seeing the motorcyclist too late to avoid the collision are the most common scenarios. The single biggest danger to a motorcycle rider are other drivers making left turns when the bike is traveling straight through an intersection.

A perfect example is the 2006 motorcycle accident involving Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. According to the reports, he was struck at an intersection by a turning driver, and had no chance to avoid the accident. Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike at impact, landing on the car, suffering a knee injury and a potentially life-threatening head injury. He was "lucky" to escape with a broken jaw and facial bone injuries.
