Car Accidents With Deer

The month of November is upon us!

The spider-webs and costumes have been put away.

The football games have become a bit more brisk.

And many of us may be running more errands with family and friends coming into town for the Thanksgiving holiday.

So while driving to family events, running errands around town or even trekking to football games, be on the lookout for deer.  The University of Georgia has recently released a study that is warning Atlanta drivers of the increased presence of deer on our roadways.  As part of the UGA study, research was conducted on a county-by-county basis to evaluate the number of deer-car collisions. The study found that these types of collisions coincided with deer’s’ breeding season.

Beginning today, Tuesday, November 10, 2015, deer breeding season reaches its peak and will be in full swing in Gwinnett County and the metro Atlanta area.  Although it may sound a bit strange, the University is excited to be able to share this information with drivers.

As a result, collisions between cars and deer will increase over the coming weeks and months.  Since bucks will become less cautious as their focus shifts to mating, motorists must be particularly careful when driving and keep a close eye on the road at all times.

According to Grady Newsource, Georgia was ranked 19th in the nation for deer-car collisions.  In fact, 1 out of every 134 Georgia drivers hit a deer annually.  From 2014 to 2015, Georgia drivers were 4.7% more likely to hit a deer than in previous years. The average annual cost to repair a vehicle after a car-deer collision is $4,000.00.  These risks only increase during the months of October, November and December.

While you may have several events, errands and places to be in the coming months, please be cautious as our roadways may have more company.
