Google Gives Thanksgiving Driving Tips

Minimize Your Risk of a Car Accident on Thanksgiving

Who would’ve thought that Google, the search engine we all adore and use daily, would be providing us with Thanksgiving driving tips! It’s true and the research they provide is in fact grabbing the attention of people across the country. So before you grab your keys and venture to grandma’s house for her sweet potato pie, take some pointers from the article released on NBC’s website this past week.

The study was done in 2014, using one of Google’s most valuable platforms—Google maps. This handy little feature allows Google to measure over a billion users (monthly statistic) who utilize the mapping feature on their cellular devices. NBC’s Today Show discussed the results of Google’s study which analyzed the number of people on the road the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Google pulled the data on Android users in 21 major cities across the country that had their location/map devices enabled and this is what they found…………

  • Worst Traffic Day: Wednesday---unless you live in Boston, Honolulu, Providence or San Francisco. So Georgians, try to travel any day other than hump day.
  • The worst time to be on the road: Wednesdays between 3:00pm and 5:00pm
  • Black Friday shouldn’t be thought of as the plague anymore. The traffic isn’t as bad as you think.
  • Thanksgiving Day travel isn’t a bad idea and if you can do it then Google suggests you try. The only time you should avoid on Turkey Day is between 12:00 p.m. – 2:00p.m.
  • If your Thanksgiving plans involve a long weekend it is better to stay put until Sunday rather than Saturday. The study found that travel is 40% worse on Saturday than it is on Sunday.
  • Fact (although it won’t affect Georgians): Los Angeles is the worst city in the country for travelers during Thanksgiving week.

We hope before you start your turkey trotting adventures, you can avoid or try some new travel plans this holiday. As always, we wish you a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
