Drunk Drivers on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day festivities are upon us and we want more than just “luck” to be on your side. In no way are we trying to hover over your pot o’ gold, but we do want to touch on the safety precautions you and your loved ones should take when participating in this ever so popular holiday.

A sea of green will be sure to hit the streets of the downtown Atlanta area and the surrounding suburbs. While the celebrating is sure to be widespread at restaurants and bars, the importance of safety needs to be at the forefront of our minds as well. A study conducted in 2010 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that 32% of fatalities from motor vehicle crashes were connected to drunk driving on St. Patrick’s Day. From 2009 to 2013 there were a total of 276 lives lost on this particular holiday due to drunk driving as well.

So how can we avoid these dangers?

Whether you are hosting a party, attending the local parade or meeting friends at the bar, it is incredibly important to designate a sober driver if you have had too much to drink. Additionally, we can also take into consideration some safety tips provided by the NHTSA.

  1. Designate a sober driver.
  2. Avoid drinking too much alcohol too quickly.
  3. Use your community’s sober ride program (UBER).
  4. Be attentive to your friends - don’t let them drive if they are intoxicated.
  5. Always wear your safety belt.

At Kaine Law, we want your St. Patrick’s Day to be one that you enjoy, but also remain safe. Don’t risk your life or the lives of others due to being impaired.  Take a moment and watch this ad campaign presented on http://youtu.be/X-JgnlDxzCE by the NHTSA and the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT).
