Veteran’s Day

We celebrate Veteran’s Day each year---an American holiday dedicated to those who have fought for our freedoms in times of tyranny and oppression. We strive to honor those men and women who have dedicated their lives to giving us the freedoms many of may take for granted. The individuals who have willingly risked their lives so that we can feel at peace knowing that our democracy is protected by our family members, friends and sometimes the strangers that touch our hearts in the most random meeting. Today we honor them, but tomorrow and the next we should continue a celebration of their unselfish and patriotic acts.

According to a study done in 2010, Georgia has a total of 773,858 veterans which is approximately 8% of the State’s population. There are approximately 216,000 veterans who reside in the metro Atlanta area and they deal with a host of challenges. Over half have experienced homeless, unemployment and mental/physical health challenges since returning/transitioning back to civilian life. Throughout the metro area, there have been organizations/foundations developed to help the thousands of veterans who are in need of our help.

The following organizations are all heavily involved in metro-Atlanta:
• Wounded Warrior Project
• Disabled American Veterans
• Paralyzed Veterans of America
• Veterans of Foreign Wars
• The United Way of Atlanta

Last, but not least, you can also go to www.volunteermatch.org which provides information on how you can volunteer. Currently, there is a program dedicated to helping veterans living in nursing and/or hospice homes. Please take a moment and learn more.

In honor of Veterans Day, we would like to celebrate veterans near and far for their continued service and dedication in keeping us safe today, tomorrow and the many years to come. Take time to thank a veteran---whether it is a phone call, letter or volunteering at a local organization.
