American Red Cross Travel Tips for Thanksgiving

Here we are, folks…7 days before Thanksgiving. And, in case you haven’t heard, Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year.

The American Red Cross has compiled a list of travel tips that will, hopefully, make your Thanksgiving more about Grandma’s Thanksgiving Dinner and less about the local hospital’s version of Thanksgiving dinner.

The full list of travel tips can be viewed on the American Red Cross website (Thanksgiving Travel Tips), but we have posted some highlights, and added a few of our own, below:

Operation Turkey Travel - Driving

• Buy or make your own emergency preparedness kits. Include water, snacks, flashlights, first aid kit, blankets, and extra cash;
• Schedule a check-up for your vehicle;
• Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicles around you;
• Use your headlights as dusk approaches or in inclement weather. We recommend using your headlights whether day or night, rain or shine;
• If you are driving in rainy, snowy, or foggy conditions – DO NOT OVERDRIVE YOUR HEADLIGHTS! Sometimes you cannot see the brake lights ahead of you, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there;
• Follow ALL of the rules of the road, speed limits, adjusting speed for curves, etc.; and
• In the event of car trouble, pull your car completely off the roadway to avoid a collision.

Operation Turkey Travel – Planes, Trains, or Buses

• Do not wait until the last minute to pack your tickets. Pack these things the night before and tell someone else where you put them;
• Arrive early enough to check your luggage and have a moment to relax before being swept up in the holiday travelling frenzy. You will find your mood less grumpy and your body more rested when you arrive at your destination; and
• If you are travelling overseas, leave a copy of each person’s passport with a friend or neighbor in case the original is lost. Doing so will make re-entry into the United States much easier.
